The Piper J-3 "Cub" seen rising from Marlboro Airport is one of about 20,000 such machines, most of which were built between '39 and '46. There was such a majority of Cubs among the total lightplane fleet in the country that the name "Cub" was used loosely to refer to all single-engine civil aircraft. The artist is seen in this painting, on his first solo flight, in the fall, 1968.
