The once feared Japanese base at Truk, major anchorage for the Japanese Combined
Fleet, is being reduced to a statistic of war. In a ferocious two-day aerial
assault on 16-17 February 1944, carrier-borne aircraft of Task Force 58
eliminate all effectiveness of the Japanese base. In the foreground the F6F-3 of
Lt. Alex Vraciu, leads Hellcats of VF6 as they hurtle across the lagoon at
masthead height with guns blazing, creating havoc as they tear into the enemy
positions below.
