Günther Rall, third highest scoring ace in history, is depicted being assisted
into his Messerschmitt Bf-109 G3 "black 13" during the late summmer of 1942. Rall
was at that time flying in JG 52 operating in the Ukraine region of the Eastern Front.
The high tide of summer refers to the last fruitful period in Luftwaffe history -
a time when hunting was good and the bounty was plenty. The tide was about to turn
for Germany as thousands of new allied fighters and bombers began to overwhelm
the Luftwaffe, putting them into a increasingly defensive role.
By the time Günther Rall was finally shot down by Zemke's Wolfpack and became a P.O.W, he had acheived 275 aerial victories!
