In 1988, Keith Ferris was invited by the Miltary Airlift Command to join an inspection trip to the National Science Foundation science base at McMurdo Sound, South Antarctica. The C-141 they arrived in is shown on the ice with some of the shy, waist-high Emperor penguins that inhabit the region. This view, from the penguins' perspective, gives rise to the question, who is inspecting whom?
