Of all the great aces in the ETO during World War II, only one was awarded America's highest decoration for bravery, the Congressional Medal of Honor. On January 11th, 1944, P-51 pilot Major James Howard found himself separated from fellow escort fighters and with a major German challenge to the bombers relying on him for protection. Engaging a vastly superior force of Luftwaffe fighters, Howard pressed on his aggressive attack ending with three German fighters destroyed and one damaged; the remaining enemy fighters abandoned their attack. Upon return to his base only a single bullet hole was found in Howard's Mustang.
