They called her the Lightning! She was a fast, powerful, twin-tailed beauty that
helped turn the tide of World War II in Europe, while protecting America's
shores. The Lockheed company built over 9,000 of the P-38 fighters at its
Burbank, California plant during the war years. The mostly female work force at Burbank worked around the clock to produce
enough P-38s for the Army and Air Force. In Stan Vosburg's new print, we see two
"Rosie Riviters", Vi and Selma, as they unpack for an afternoon at the beach.
Having finished their shift at the ball turret factory at Anaheim, they have
traveled to Corona del Mar. Their kids can now unwind and play in the low tide
shallows. Military aircraft flying overhead were a common sight, but it was always
exciting to see and hear the big birds up close in a low flyby. The finishing
touch to a sand castle is a worthy work of art, but for one of the twins, the
approach and roar of the P-38s' two supercharged Allison engines is enough to
send him leaping in ecstasy. His brother contemplates the opportune time to
destroy his cousin's masterpiece, while his pal turns to see the errant twin
greeting the Lightnings hurtling through the air!
